Wilkinkarra Fabric – Blue and Black on Burnt Sienna (Tencel Linen) 50cm

This design by Zakius Jack shows the ‘Wilkinkarra Story’.

The design shows the artist’s father’s country, Lake Mackay. It tells the story about a large bushfire coming from the east turning the land into a lake. The circles in the paintings stand for water holes scattered around and the lines between are the tracks of animals looking for water.

This fabric has been screen printed by hand by Publisher Textiles and Papers, ensuring the highest quality and longevity.

Kalipinpa Fabric – Gold and Silver on Fuschia (Silk) 50cm

This design by Mavis Nampitjinpa Marks shows the ‘Kalipinpa – Water Tjukurrpa (Dreaming)’. it’s north of Kintore. For Aboriginal people of the Western Desert, Kapi (water) is a crucial resource for survival. When the rains arrive in the desert the landscape comes to life with all the desert flowers blooming, bush tucker abundant and people taking advantage of all the joys that water brings.

Watiya Tjuta – Wool Table Runner (Yellow, Navy and Pink)

Watiya (tree) Tjuta (many) is the artist’s iconic rendering of her late father’s Tjukurrpa (Dreaming). In this design, the artist depicts the ceremonial spear straightening in Uwalkari country (Gibson desert region). The spear straightening is part of restricted men’s business. Mitjilli was given the right to depict the source of the spears by her father, however, the ceremony cannot be revealed in her works. Uwalkari is abundant with Watiya Tjuta and other plants that grow in a landscape dominated by sandhills. Mitjilli came from an acclaimed family of artists and the imagery of Watiya Tjuta is a recurring motif in her artwork.

Watiya Tjuta Tiny Velvet Cosmetic Bag

This beautiful cosmetic bag features Mitjili Naputtula’s artwork, ‘Watiya Tjuta’, and has been made by our ethical partners, Better World Arts.

About the Artwork

Mitjili paints the Watiya Tjuta tree. Mitjili’s style is unique and recognisable. The Watiya Tjuta in Mitjili’s paintings is her father’s Tjukurrpa (dreaming) in Ilyingaungau country (Gibson Desert). This was passed down to her by her mother, Tjunkayi Napaltjareri when story telling, using the same to draw the story as it is told in the traditional way. She remembers “…After I got married, my mother taught me my father’s Tjukurrpa in the sand, that’s what I’m painting on the canvas”, a women’s interpretation.

Better World Arts 

Has been operating for over two decades.

They work with traditional artisans from remote regions in Kashmir, Peru, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal (Tibetan refugees). They work with Australian Aboriginal artists from remote communities across Australia, from Arnhem Land to Central and the Western Desert regions, from rural locations and from cities.
