Kubal Kababina

Anne Nunn is Nyungul woman. Her paintings depict cultural, historic and contemporary stories from her Country, the Helensvale and Shipton’s Flat area in Far North Queensland.

“My painting depicts the plants and animals that live and grow around my bubu (country). I love going out bush and am especially inspired by the wetland dikal (birds) like the kubal (brolga) that live in the walngka (swamp grasses) and kababina (water lilies)”.

Yindili

My painting is about the female Yindili, Kingfisher. She is in love and seeking material fortune, she forgets what her natural path is. She is lost in the process and found all over again.

Tested by temptation, it is all around us. We seem to forget what we do have and are blind to the natural beauty that is life. Imagination and creation are the things we want to grasp but we do not appreciate it as it is. May we ever get the chance to see her fly.

OLD MAN OF THE WATERFALL

This painting tells the story of the giant eels (Kubarr) on my home land and the old fellas are the spirits of the waterfall that protects the eels. The old men of the waterfall guides and protects the area as their sacred grounds.
