Bana Yirriji Art Centre represents artists from the Yalanji, Nyungkul and Jalunji clan groups.  

Bama (local people) have had a long history of artistic expression, including ceremonial body painting, weavings made from local plants, rainforest shields and weaponry decorated with clan designs using earth pigments.

Today, artists create stunning contemporary arts and crafts; including paintings, prints, works on paper, textiles, weavings, artefacts and a range of merchandise. Artists draw on their rich cultural, historic, and contemporary stories and profound connection to country as inspiration.

Mili & Yunga

I am Kuku Nyungkul from Shipton Flat area and have spent a lot of time camping out on Country collecting and hunting bush foods with my family.

My painting depicts my totem, the Mili (Stinging Tree Dendrocnide moroides) and Yunga (Green Ants).

My grandmother is from Wujal Wujal where the Stinging Tree is known as Mili and my grandfather is from Coen where it is known as Appun.

The stinging tree has leaves which stings when you have contact with it, the leaves have hairs which get stuck to your skin if touched. The best medicine to use if you get stung is tobacco or your own urine.

My grandparents taught us children since we were a young age to collect Yunga for bush medicine to help get rid of the flu and runny nose

Baral – Tracks

Our bubu (country) is like a storybook.  Baral (tracks) tell you what animal is travelling around. Some of the tracks we see are from the kurriyala (snake), walkarr (lizard) and kadar (wallaby). We can track the animals we hunt by following their tracks. The waybala (whitefella) has bought new tracks into our country, shoes and mudaka (motorcar) and plenty of bulki (cattle).

I’m painting the bird and animal tracks you find on the beach.  You can see them going this way and that way.  Everywhere!
