Kaiela Daki Woka-n Lotjpatj (River Reeds Speaking Country) #3

The essence of this story is about valuing and respecting our Aboriginal knowledge systems and world views. Yorta Yorta people historically are known as river peoples. We’re strongly connected to Ancestral Country and ecological ways of knowing, doing, seeing and being. The importance of identity and stories that connect us to place, each other and all living things in our natural world is critical to us knowing who we are, where we come and how we shape our future. Identity and stories are the foundation of pride and promise for all people and especially for Aboriginal people who are deeply connected to country across the whole of Australia.

Memories Through Bark #2

This work represents the textures, colours, shapes and leaves connected with the bark of our old gum trees. It makes me feel proud and connected to my Yorta Yorta country and think about many memories growing up in the bush and down the river with all my mob. This work was produced in collaboration with Melbourne-based Spacecraft Studio who have established an innovative working relationship with Kaiela Arts leading to significant project commissions with the NGV, MUMA, RMIT and SAM. This work was part of the 2021 Identity project. The project was a collaborative creative process utilising natural mineral pigments sourced by the artists on-country, and hand screen-printing and painting of artworks that had been developed through previous commissions.
