GNARLA GNARLA ARNYININGGUNDU

The people of Mowanjum have always been great ambassadors to the reconciliation process by sharing their culture with others.  Gnarla Gnarla Arnyininggundu (Teaching Them) provides a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of traditional performances from the three tribes of the Mowanjum community. Featuring dances from the Worrorra, Ngarinyin and Wunambal people with English translations, it shows the origins of the performances, and the stories that connect people to their homelands.

Waanungga (sugar bag) by Gudu Mungulu, Adult T Shirt

Gudu Mungulu often paints Waanugga, which is a word that describes various forms of bush honey. The hives in which honey is stored are called ‘Sugarbag’, and can be found in trees and in termite mounds. The Wandjinas keep the countryside fresh and healthy which allows the native bees to produce high quality honey in Gudu’s homeland. Gudu’s name ‘Guduwolla’ is Ngarinyin for a particular tree which is favoured by Kimberley honey-flies. It’s white pollen is conspicuous from August until September, and is the main source of bush sugar in The Kimberley.

The Wandjina is the centre of spiritual life for the three tribes who live at Mowanjum Worrorra, Ngarinyin and Wunumbal.  The stories of the Wandjina from Lalai (creation time) inform all aspects of life in this West Kimberely Aboriginal community and are publicly celebrated each year in a festival of ritual, dance and song.

Wandjina represents the laws of everything the surrounds us trees, rivers, rocks, bush fruit and animals, all creation. The Wandjinas give the law on how we have to treat and use these creations. Wandjina the rainmaker

This Wandjina is called the rainmaker. Two lightning spirits in a cave are waiting for the clouds to gather up, so he can make the rain and lightning. Where you see a lot of Wandjinas they represent the laws of trees, rivers, rocks, bush fruit, animals and all of creation. The Wandjinas give the law on how we have to treat and use these creations. These customs are carried on today.
