Sturt Pea Spinifex (jurlawirdinyabirding baru)
This is the sturt pea growing amongst the spinifex on my country.
The early morning mist over the water is the smoke from the breakfast fires of the Marrga, the creation spirits. According to Yindjibarndi law, in the beginning the sky was very low. When the creation spirits, Marrga, arose from the ground they raised the sky and the world out of the ocean. This creation story is called Ngurru Nyujunnggama, ‘When the World was Soft’. The Marrga gave names and form to the country and then to all the birds and animals. Finally they created the Ngaardangarli, the Aboriginal people.
I am a Jalanji saltwater woman. Jalanji people have lots of stories about the reef. My painting’s story is about Mili (stinging jellyfish) stirring out on the reef.
We were taught at a young age to watch out because these mili sting and can be very dangerous. There are special plants that we can use on mili stings. Our elders passed on this knowledge to us.

This is Woodbrook Station. You can see the managers house and the shearers house and the kitchen. This is how I remember it before the cyclone came and destroyed the buildings. I paint with my feet on the ground, but I can map out the country as if I was flying over. I have painted this from my memory. Instead of painting with dots and marks like traditional aboriginal paintings I like to paint things figuratively so everyone can understand.
