CYCLE OF LIFE

The coconut tree has a big impact towards the people of the Torres Strait. The coconut fruit provides food for eating and cooking, the leaves of the coconut tree provide thatching for shelter and shade for the islander on a sunny day or when it’s time for bed. Also, the leaves are used for weaving baskets and making toys for the village children to play with. This also helps with the cycle of life, because the knowledge is passed down from generation to generation. When the fruit falls from the tree it rolls into the sea and starts drifting with the tide and the current out to the open sea, then eventually the fruit gets washed up onto a sand cay and few years down the track the sand cay will turn into a deserted island.

Turtle

This turtle was created by stitching reclaimed fishing net, rope and twine. Reclaimed fishing nets (also known as ghost nets) are derelict fishing nets that drift aimlessly at sea indiscriminately fishing, killing turtles, other creatures and tangling boat propellers. We are recycling these nets, incorporating other flotsam and making products for enjoyment and use. By purchasing this product, you are helping indigenous communities who collect this net and other groups who make items to develop economic opportunities. We hope this product brings you great joy and helps spread the ghost net message.

Eric’s Home Reef

Erics home is affected by both climate change and human contact. Human contact (DIVERS) ruins his home by wrecking the rocks and stone that creates his home and a shelter for him to hide and protect himself from all the predators of the reef Some divers are so caught up in their jib that they damage Erics home in order to grab the cray hiding in and under the rocks. Coral bleaching and the crown of thorn are one of the main sources that has a big impact on Erics home reef.

Hatchling/Nests

Turtles and their nesting are in danger due to the rising temperatures caused by climate change. The movement of the sand cay also puts the eggs at risk, if the nest is too close to the outer part of the sand cay, the eggs are at risk being washed away or if the nest is buried in an area without any shade near it, the direct heat from the sun produces an all-male hatchlings, whereas is the nest was buried in a shady area away from the heat or close to the centre of the sand cay, it will have a better chance of surviving and producing both male and female hatchling.

RAY THE ROOKIE

There was this particular group of Eagle Ray that all the little baby eagle rays wanted to be like just because this group of eagle rays are always trying to help the reef out with anything they can be help of. Few years have passed and Ray came into the picture, he told his friends when he gets older, he will be just like them and working with them. Rays time came he built up the courage and late one afternoon he approached the Boss Ray, by that night Ray swam out of the Bosses cave with the biggest smile wearing the colour proudly as he swam passed the other members of the group. They welcomed him in to the group with a new name “RAY THE ROOKIE”

Wagilag ga Wititj Dhawu (Wagilag Sisters and Olive Python Story)

The Wagilag Sisters are central to the four important ceremonies of the Dhuwa moiety; the Djungguwan, the Gunabibi, the Ngulmarrk, and the Mandaialla.

The story is primarily an account of how, in the distant past, the two Wagilag Sisters came out of the southern interior and across the countryside to the Liyagalawumirr waterhole at Mirarrmina. There the younger sister profaned the pool of Wititj (the great Olive Python) by accidently allowing her blood to fall into the waterhole. Because of this, the women (and their children) were swallowed by Wititj.

All of the other sacred snakes stood up with their heads in the clouds and talked to each other with voices like thunder. The Pythons discovered that they had different languages and ‘skins’. Wititj confessed to eating the two women; his own moiety and fell to earth making a big depression in the ground. The big wind blew across the land making the first dry season. Wititj was ordered by the snakes to vomit the women and children back up. When he did this he also vomited up all the water from the waterhole, creating the monsoonal rains.
