Nylalindi

In this painting Selena has paid homage to her father, B Bununggurr, by depicting the vastness of Gurwliny (Arafura Wetlands) in North East Arnhem Land and in particular his homeland of Nylalindi. These are the second biggest wetlands in the world, Florida has the biggest, and in this painting Bobby is showing the colours of the dry season sunsets and of the Earth and sky and the landscape scorched by fires used to control growth and for hunting, and the wilderness of the grasslands and paperbark tree forests which line the freshwater billabongs, so abundant in food and birdlife.

My Country and Bush Medicine – Betty Pula Morton

The community of Ampilatwatja made a conscious decision not to paint ‘altyerr’ dreaming stories. The artists paint their country where those stories sit.

I paints my country  where I finds bush tucker and bush medicine. I am very happy when out bush hunting and gathering, it is where I feel connected to country and culture. My inspiration is from being out on the land, especially from the hunting and gathering trips where I see the different seasonal plants, bush foods and medicines, that are producing at that time and observes the ever-changing layered landscapes, it is always changing, with the light of day and the seasons of the year.

I enjoy and understand the importance of painting bush medicine plants. They help in the healing of my people and it keeps the tradition and knowledge strong. These particular plants are very plentiful after rain and can be used for numerous conditions, such as skin irritations, flu, coughs and infections.

Bush medicine plants are used for healing on the body and for drinking. We make this by smashing the plants with a rock, we use the juice and the fibre of the plant. We collect bush medicine plants when we are out hunting, different kinds of plants grow during different seasons.

There are lots of different medicines, we know what their stories are as we learnt them from our parents and we teach these stories to our children.

My Country – Michelle Pula Holmes

“When I go out hunting I always like to see the colour in the trees, the light, the dark and the bush medicine plants growing on the sand hills. The colours change at sunrise and sunset. I like hunting and seeing my country.”

My Mothers Country – Eileen Bonney

The community of Ampilatwatja made a conscious decision not to paint ‘altyerr’ dreaming stories. The artists paint their country where those stories sit.

Eileen has painted ‘Tijamburra’, her mothers country.

“This is my mothers country, we go hunting there for wild onions, goannas, echidnas and sugarbag honey in the trees. I like to hunt there, there’s water all year round. Even if it doesn’t look like there is, we follow the bird tracks to know where to dig and we find water.”

From living here in the remote community of Ampilatwatja, going hunting out bush and traveling for family and ceremonies Eileen knows this land, her country.

Raypiny Dhawu (Fresh Water Story)

All Aboriginal people originate from a spiritual source, fixed in a particular place in their land or the sea. These ‘spiritual reservoirs’ are often in the form of special waterholes made by Wangarr (creative spirits) that were created long ago close to the beginning of time. These creator beings moved across the countryside, shaping the land and implanting in each tract of country, the spiritual life force for the people who were to own it. These creative spirits took many forms and when they gave the land to each group, they also gave songs, dances, ceremony, the associated laws and language.

The creation story for Ganalbingu people took place near the middle section of the Glyde River where it becomes the Goyder River. Their land, Ngaliyindi, sits astride the Arafura Swamp in Central Arnhem Land. Many Ganalbingu artists paint totemic species significant to their clan. These can include baru (crocodile), banda (long necked turtle), buliya (catfish), yalman (waterlilies), gumang (magpie geese), dakawa (fresh water yabby), ratjuk (barramundi), warrnyu (flying fox) and more.

Ngulmun Kosar Koey Ai. (Our two main traditional foods)

This print is one of my first drypoint medium prints created using the recycled liquid milk container. In this print I tell the story of Our two main traditional foods the dugong and the turtle both which are killed in large numbers by the ghostnets floating everywhere in Our Torres Strait Waters. The ghost nets which the commercial boat cut loose when staged are the biggest kills of not only the dugongs and turtles also every sea creatures sharks, dolphins etc..

The reason I used the colour red its are threat now and I feel there’s not enough thats being done about cleaning the ghost net up here in the Torres Strait Waters. Giving warning also that these pests the ghostnets is a current threat and a high risk for Us because Our people travel on the waters by outboard powered boats. The ghostnets needs to be cleared from Our Waters, reefs and islands

Bush Tucker – Maisie Petyarre Bundey;-

Maisie paints the bush tucker found in her country, the area that surrounds Boundary Bore in the Utopia homelands. She paints bush plums, bush bananas, bush potatoes and bush medicine plants. The main motif which recurs often in Maisie artworks is a full coolamon. When she paints she always speaks of gathering and hunting on her country ‘long way from here, long time ago’, filling up coolamons with ‘bush potato, bush banana, goanna and porcupine.’ Maisie always says her family are ‘happy ones, healthy ones.’
