Goorlabal Ngarranggarni – Marlene Juli

This work is inspired by a Ngarranggarni (Dreaming) story about Goorlabal the Serpent.

In the Ngarranggarni, Goorlabal travelled from One Mile in search of water. He found water in the Springvale River. He rolled on his back in the water because he was over-heated. He turned into stone and is still there today.

Goorlabal protects the waterways near Warmun, and this work shows the waterways entwined with the vertebrae of Goorlabal.

Kilkayi Barramundi Dreaming

Three women trying to trap Dayiwul the great barramundi with spinifex nets. This is a traditional method of fishing where by nyiyirriny (river spinifex) is rolled and placed in the water forming a kind of net. Dayiwul was too clever for the women and jumped over the barrier they had laid.  She pushed her body through the rock of what is now called Pitt Range. The women gave up and walked to a place called Gawinyji (Cattle Creek) where they turned into rocks.
The scales of Dayiwul embedded in the rock, became the diamonds that are extracted from the Argyle Diamond Mine.

Goorra-goorran Country- Special Water

“Goorra-goorran Country is my grandfather’s Country – Sandy Thomas. This painting represents a special waterhole way out there; the bright section in the middle is special healing water.

“In the early days you would go and drink it when you’re feeling sick or sore. The animals could be healed by drinking the water too. If they have broken legs even.

Goorra-goorran Country spans from Violet valley and up past Warmun and out around Bow River; and this waterhole is a long way out in that country. Nowadays you can only get there via helicopter.

I hope to get there one day soon.”

Ngaginyji Joomooloony

This painting is about Joomena’s Ngaginyji Joomooloony, her boab tree. “The boab tree we are born under becomes our special tree; this one is Ngaginyji Joomooloony, which means ‘My Boabtree'”

Eileen Bray Joomena was born on the side of a dusty highway along the road to Ord River and next to the creek that runs into Birnuwun (Alice Downs), Joomoon’s traditional county. The family had ventured out on a fishing trip when Eileen’s mum went into labour and was ‘laid down, with her sisters in law’, under a big boab tree and gave birth. The women stayed under the boab for a week, as is customary, and until ready to go back to camp.

OLD TEXAS/NEW TEXAS (Bullungard country) – Mark Nodea

The painting I do is all about my mother’s country, Texas Downs Station – there’s Old Texas and New Texas, which is the one still standing today. Ballangara is the name of country, the place goes back a long way, from early ages. Our old people, ancestors survived and were living on this rough and beautiful landscape, as you see it today. This Country goes a long way before my grandparents and mother came along to this country.
