In this painting, Brenda depicts her mother’s Country when it floods with wet season rains. During the the wet season, the creeks, rivers and freshwater springs of Woorre-woorrem overflow multiplying their meander until the country is criss-crossed with watercourses.

Peggy Griffiths has depicted jilynbeng (bush cucumber) intertwined with the jardang (spinifex grass) of her Country. These both come out in the wet season. When it rains, the spinifex grass has a strong eucalyptus smell. Spinifex grasses were used by women as a form of bush medicine, particularly contraception, and burned to keep mosquitos away.

Jinamoom

Jinamoom is the area of the Keep River as it flows through the gorge country. During the wet season it is joined by little floodwater creeks and the open country becomes marshy. There are lots of new grasses and spinifex growing and you can see the spirit of country as it moves across the land with the wind in the grasses. In this painting there has been lots of wind drying out the country before the rains come.

Yardanggarlm (Dingo Springs)

Ward depicts a traditional area of Miriwoong Country outside Kununura in the east Kimberley, WA. “This painting is also about ceremony for young men.” Ward maps out Country, its ranges, river systems, rocky outcrops, natural springs and even Lake Argyle through the use of vividly coloured tessellating ochre triangles. The amorphous shape in the centre of the painting, represents Yardanggarlm or Dingo Springs, a large outcrop created by the Dingo when he passed during the Dreamtime for male ceremony on his
way to the Northern Territory. Ward paints for young Miriwoong people and his visual language references important cultural teachings.

Goorloordoordoog – Pigeon Dreaming

Goorloordoordoog – the peace pigeon created this country by scratching out the ground with his feet in the Dreamtime. The central design represents a freshwater spring that the pigeon hid underground. A long time ago this place may have been a desert. The old people had to dig for water and used to walk across the country with water in their mouths swallowing a little bit at a time to save their thirst before finding the next place to dig for water. This spring is a dreaming place and should be protected but it has been destroyed by pastoralists who have allowed cattle to roam all over it. I use the nuclear waste symbol at the centre as a sign to say – keep away!

This painting depicts the artists’ country, Gemilarrgen or Top Dam, before Lake Argyle Dam was built. This area is now under water.
This is also the Dreaming of the black headed water python, Doolood, who left eggs there in the Dreamtime.

Artwork 2: Pigeon Dreaming

Ben has depicted Pigeon Dreaming in this painting. The central design represents a water hole, surrounded by trees and red hills. “The pigeon created this country by scratching out the ground with his feet in the Dreamtime.”
